A long time ago, in an apartment far far away, I was lying around being a loser while my roommate was getting prepped for an online date. Now as he's pretty much half man half princess, his prep time is as time-consuming as that of a high school cheerleader on prom night. While primping, he began expressing trepidations over his upcoming date. From blow dry, to gel, to mousse to pomade… as each stage of his hair ritual passed his anxieties continued to escalate. An hour later and with enough product put in his hair to make it bullet proof and withstand a category five hurricane, he came up with what he thought was a brilliant idea on how to best ease his angst over tonight's date. His genius plan was to bring me along.

After informing him that this terrific idea was in fact terrible, as the poor girl would become the third wheel on her own date, he moved on to his dressing ritual. Somewhere between the 4th and 8th shirt, I had an idea. "Call your date and ask her if she has any single friends who are free tonight. If so I'll come along and we'll make it a double date." He loved the idea and gave her a call.

As luck would have it, indeed she had a single friend who was available, we booked the double date and in seconds we had solved numerous problems with this single solution. A boring night for me and a stressful night for my roommate had been turned into a fun double date.

While waiting for him to finish primping, I realized this double date option really was an intriguing new way to combine friends and online dating. So I hopped on my computer and typed www.doubledate.com in my address bar. At this point I hadn't online dated before but could see the distinct advantages it offered. My roommate was meeting lots of new people and going out on dates while I was still single, had no dates and was spending nights home alone. While I wasn't a big fan of the solitary online dating world, the idea of double dating with my friends sounded like a really fun option. I typed in the domain name with the expectations of joining this site. However I was met with "domain not found." Ten minutes and one credit card payment later, I suddenly owned my first domain name and……….well two and half years and a ton of blood sweat and tears later…..here we are and away we go. ☺
